Melanerpes formicivorus
Blomone Hastings Reservation
15 May 1650. A ♀ (looked like she had a dark spot on the R side of
her forehead, hence ♀649) was looking out of the hole in
the main trunk of the granary. Could be because of
the wretched weather, but then again...
16 May 630. Watching the hole from the hide
730. ♀wn/DS#649 enters hole. 731. ♂O₁/B₁R#492 comes to hole
briefly, flies off. 733. ♀ looks out and eventually leaves.
815. Going to check the nest.
1010. Well, rather to my surprise, the nest is going here:
they have 2 eggs! This discovery forced me to spend the
subsequent 1½ hrs or so sawing open the hole—an
unpleasant task to say the least. This at any rate
allowed me to mark the eggs so we'll know if they
get tossed or not.
Also, it would appear likely that ♀649 laid at least
one of the eggs this morning (possibly before I arrived).
I would have to guess that there's still a good chance
for some egg tossing here, especially if all 3 ♀♀ are
going to lay. Of course, some tossing may already have
occurred.
1500. Checked the hole with the peeper: still 2 eggs.
542. Watching. The 2 eggs are still in the hole.
605. ♂O₁/B₁R#493 over in small Blue Oak.
830. The birds are around (I also saw ♂492 and ♀649)
but none at all went to or into the hole. I'll check
it again to make sure, but things appear to be in something
of a holding pattern for the moment.
