1981 Walker D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Haystack (24 April) 818. Bird at the Blue Oak hole again. This seems to be the only hole anyone's paying attention to at the moment. 830. Went over and checked the Blue Oak hole: nothing yet, and it's not really prepared for eggs yet either. 900. 9604 still off on the periphery Carricking every 2-5s. 930. That's it for now. Birds are interested in holes, but I think it will be a little while yet before they actually try to nest. 27 April Arrived at 600, only to see a ♀ looking out of the '80 nest hole! I immediately climbed up and checked, but nothing in it yet (whew!). 620. Now watching. 650. Birds have finally returned: ⚪8307 and ⚪♀523; ⚪9524 750. ⚪8461. Some more interest in the '80 nest hole. 845. Not much else going on. 9604 definitely gone; those 4 are settled. I bet they'll nest in the '80 nest hole within the next week - but not today. 900. Leaving. 29 April 600. Watching. Ron over in far area. None in any holes. ⚪8461 here; also ⚪8307, ⚪9524, ⚪♀523. Also at least 1 intruder hanging around, being chased. 800. 9524 went into the '79 nest hole for a short time. Some interest has been shown in both holes, particularly this one. 809. Brief mounting: 8307 and 9523. A 3rd bird appeared right away, however. 819. ⚪A ♀ (not sure who) was in the Blue Oak hole for a minute; 8461 hung outside for 20s or so while she was inside. 830. 9523 went into the '79 hole; left after ~45s.
