1981 Walter D. Koenig
Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack Hastings Reservation
(6 April)
1130. Caught 9509 in the net as she was flying & into the MT.
Measured and released her.
1140. As a Cooper's Hawk came cruising by being chased by
the Kestrel, at least 2-3 birds gave alarm calls, while
everyone shut up and hid. Why, if alarm calling is
neotism, should birds at Revolutions give them? To warn
their direct competitors?
1145. Well, at the moment I'd still hesitate to call this
one. The 2 ub 99 are clearly ahead in that they are
in charge of the MT, but the real power still to be
dealt with there is 9587. Meanwhile, 9642's advantage
may actually be that she need not contend (at least at
the moment) with 9587. Even though 9642 is off
on the periphery, she appears to be the only bird that
the 88 are fairly chummy with (other than 9587); I
would thus still have to refrain from counting her out.
Other contenders are several and there is still a lot
of chasing going on, so things are definitely not
over here yet.
1154. More good news: at least 1 ub 9 in the MT is now being
chased by both of the 88! Meanwhile, 8461 (at least) is
still going over to 9642 in the 2nd Tree every so often and is still
quite friendly with her. The 88 really are now (all of a
sudden?) doing a lot of chasing of 1 or more 99 in the MT.
However, 9587 is definitely not one of those being chased.
1230. Counted stores: 1342.
Leaving. Still lots going on here.
