1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Plague Hastings Reservation (17 April) ~1000, at which time both 99 went into the hole in the 2º tree and 1 of them (9494?) laid another egg there. Later, however, at 1345, I first went to the Canyon Hole, where the 2 (cold) eggs are still sitting, and then checked the hole in the 2º tree, which had already been completely cleared out and was empty! 18 April Many watched the hole in the 2º tree this morning- nothing happened there. I checked the canyon hole at about 1130 and both eggs are still there. 23 April Put in some new wood chips in the hole in the 2º tree at 1100; the hole is otherwise still empty. 27 May 1630. Banded and bled the 3 babies as #660 to 662. See Ron's notes (and my nest record sheet) for details of the (ultimate) nest here. 8 June 715. Counted stores: Plague tree: 245 ? 260. 2º tree : 15 No obvious intact acorns remain in the telephone pole, though there may still be some in the bottom of the old roost hole. 1100. Climbed up to the '80 nesthole and cleaned out the crap left there by the various Starlings that were messing around there a couple weeks ago. 19 June Jim Griffin found j662 from here on the ground up by the Old Barn this morning. He's in pristine shape-not even thin; I have no idea what his problem was. In any case → Found dead, died about 19 June 1981.
