1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanespera fomiceivora Plague Hastings Reservation (14 April) time discounted) observation of a bird in the 2° tree on the afternoon of the 12th with "½ an egg in its bill." In any case, it would appear clear that egg-tossing has occurred, our guess being by 9496, and that 9494 has already laid 2-3 eggs, all but 1 of which has been tossed by 9496. 15 April Watched the CH from 530- [illegible]; 9496 came but only briefly entered; see did not go down into the hole. 9494 laid an egg. See compilation, tone separately. When relieved by Ron I came down and checked the hole in the 2° tree, led by Ron's comment that he had seen 9496 go into it during his morning watch. And, lo and behold, there was an egg in it! This definitely is a first-both 99 competing for who will pick the next hole! For now (since 9496 could but didn't toss an egg out of the CH early this morning and nothing has happened there in a day) we're putting a full watch on the 2° tree hole. 1425. Still 2 eggs up in the CH. 1845. " " " " " " Watching CH for roosting. 16 April Today we watched both holes in the morning; nothing happened up at the canyon hole but 9494 laid an egg in the hole in the 2° tree! 17 April Today both holes were again watched up until (30° to)
