1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation 8 January Purge: 7373. Seen by L.Hanks here on 14 Apr., 28 Apr., 4 May, and 19 May 1979. Never seen at the nest, which was found on 25 June, and has disappeared since.: → Disappeared about 6 June ± 2 weeks. It's still not clear whether this bird bred here this year (and then disappeared) or whether 4883 did. The latter is still present, but only was seen at the nest once- when she was immediately pecked by 8234 (27 June- L.Hanks). 28 January 1030. Watching from hide. Lots of stores here. 1121.03 LS/WM DP #234 arrived in granary, Left right away. 1145.08 DB Might #252 came and stored a small (=live oak) acorn in a small supplementary granary nearby. 1155.03 DB or /DB or #424 in small granary storing an acorn also. 1200. Going to move hide for next time. 3 February 1235. Watching. 1250.08 344/24/24 #504 barit-cutting in the trees off to the side here. 1335. Heating down. The ♀ remains a problem, but others are here. 11 April Thought I'd finally figured out where these birds are roosting, but after setting up an ambush there they prompting roosted elsewhere. 13 April Last night at the granary I was pretty sure that 4 birds roosted - complete with some pre-roost mounting, a fair amount of rigamanole, etc. (The hole was not the low one, and one of the 4 roosted in yet a 3rd hole after the birds made such a ruckus about his attempt to enter the hole that he went
