1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation 26 June 7:00. Went up here to check the nest only to discover the entire limb on the ground! I turned the thing around until I found the hole, and opened it to find the following: 1) 1 dead baby, just hatched 2) 2 eggs which had been hatching but stopped about midway 3) 3 live newly-hatched babies! Obviously the limb had just fallen this morning! Since the babies had no future here I took them and brought them home and transplanted them to the nest at Haystack-Blouquist. In any case, this is our first failure due to the limb falling that we've ever had. 2 August Purge: 8424. Last seen 19 July 1980 (by Gwen? at the nest); gone by 8 Sept; Disappeared abt 13 Aug ± 1 month. 8504. Last seen 23 March 1981, gone by the nest date, circa 28 April → Dis. abt 9 April ± 2 wks.
