Melanerpes formicivorus
Buckeye
(19 May) 930-1230. The birds (9483, 8234, 8252, and 8619)
were fairly active and did a satisfactory amount
of feeding.
20 May Did another nestwatch today from 1415-1700. They
weren't nearly as active, and only the 2 adult 80°
fed.
At dusk I returned for roosting. The attempt
wasn't altogether satisfactory: I missed the bands
completely and was a little too far away to get the
facial features, but I think it was 8234 who
roosted in the nest. This is based mostly on negative
evidence, however, so I'll have to try again ASAP.
24 May Watched here from 800-1100, getting a good nestwatch
in with lots of visits, except that the ♀ remains
obviously quite wary of anyone being in the
hole (she fed once, then returned twice more to
the vicinity of the hole with food but did not
feed, after sitting each time for a minute or two
and deciding she didn't like the scene).
A dusk I returned, but nobody roosted in the
nest, so it looks like we've blown our opportunity
to get roosting here.
28 May 1300. Banded and bled the 4 babies here, who are #663-666.
4 June 800. Walked up and checked the other holes, but no sign
of a 2nd nest as yet.
9 June 1620. A bird flushed from low out of the granary when I arrived-
possibly indicative of a 2nd nest in the same hole. Otherwise,
