1981 Walter D. Koenig 2 Melanerpes fomivicivorus Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co, Calif. 12 May 1500. Bird in the hole at Corral Viejo#1 who wouldn't come out - a nest for sure, though I don't know if they have eggs or babies. 15 May 1630. Checked the hole at Corral Viejo#1: 4 eggs. 17 May Pam reports seeing a bird at the far end of long field this morning, coming from the North and going off to the South. He stopped for a couple of minutes in a Sycamore where she saw ? m/yellow. The best possibility for this bird would seem to be 0533 - one of the 2 birds who founded Gate in late December 1979 and then disappeared right away! 22 May 1415. At Corral Viejo#1 they have young babies (heard inside the hole). 23 May 620. Arriving a few minutes ago at Blomone, there is no activity here but what sounds rather like a Revolution of a sort over at Blomtwo, complete with Garricks, drumming, group wakes, and so forth. Going over now to see what's up. 25 May 1645-1730. Sat around and walked around at P Hill#1 hoping to see something, but failed. No sign at all of birds or a nest, as far as I could tell. However, they do seem to be pretty much out of stoves, so perhaps I shouldn't really be expecting them to have a nest. Just as I was leaving, 2 birds came and greeted each other in the central area. I waited a minute and then looked around again, but still couldn't find anything. 1800. Quitting again. Not a lot going on here, at any rate!
