1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Arnold 2 Hastings Reservation 22 October 840. 950F seen intruding at Arnold l; see Al notes. 29 November 1200. Watching. 0° ds-wm- presumably j6ll here to store an acorn. 1250: Didn't get another chance to see him. Going to count stores: Outer tree: 30 ? Inner areas: 20 30. In the process of checking the storage areas I got another look at 8° ds-wm/pe-wm#6ll who was with 8° ub (dark eye) and I think a 3rd bird. To summarize, I don't really know what's up here. My guess is that the 8 is probably still here along with a new 8 and j6ll. But why they haven't loaded the storage areas up with acorns is a complete mystery. In fact, why these birds would bother to stay here at all is a mystery, since the remains of Braise provide much better storage facilities than they have here. In any case, there do appear to be birds still here, at least for now! 11 December 1100. Walking by here, an unbanded 8 was seen, barrit-cutting in the area and sitting in the granary. No sign of anyone to chase him out, but there are stores here.
