1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. (25 August) much wiped out a large proportion of the snags, not to mention the brush, downed limbs, and ground cover. At the moment the acorn crop appears to be doing pretty well, so some of the birds up here may be able to manage for awhile. But on the whole, the carrying capacity of the area for AW must have been cut at least in half as far as granary and storage areas go. 17 November On the way back from 1800 today I found a set of AW fathers—primaries, 2°, a few rectrices—along the road right in from the 2nd crossing. There were enough scattered around to prove that someone bit the dust near here, but I have no idea who it was. 2 December Jim Griffin mentioned the presence of a fair amount of Wicker activity at P.O. Hill #1, so I went up there this afternoon just to see what's up. There was no activity at all, but there were a fair number of stored acorns, mostly Black Oaks (the granary area here was one of the few left in fair shape by the fire). 1425.08 M/wn-(Haw?)/or-w-n/or in granary. According to my records for P.O. Hill, this is most likely to be j♂ M/White Ret-Tan/Red #550 who was 1 of 5 banded at P.O. Hill #4! (Quite a ways away!) Perhaps this area does need some serious watching! 4 December 1620. No sign of stores or birds at Blomtwo.
