1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lambert Hastings Reservation (6 April) 1150. On the way back around the Reservoir I did come across a bird: 3 M? ? very possibly 3284 again. He was alone, however, and flew down to one of the canyons by South Ravine before flushing out of sight. I wonder about that 16♀ that's supposed to be here... 12 April 1530. 3rd/Deer #284 with acorn in his bill up at the upper end of the territory. 17 April Nobody seen in passing or in holes. 26 April " " " " (1210). 30 April I heard some action from up here around noon but I was too lazy to go check things out. 4 May 1300. Checked up here only to find the ♂ in a hole in the Hastings Valley Oak (the one whose limb fell last winter). I went up to discover babies (!), and opened the hole to find 5. Two were not doing very well, however, and I was definitely starving. I weighed and marked them and returned them. 20 May 1130. Set up an ambush here in hopes of nabbing the ♀ as she feeds. 1400. No luck (problems with the string and the neighbors interfered). Counted stores: LamFT: 211 Neighbor: HVO: 120 Hast VO: 160 HFT: 1024 1515. Depletion has mainly been in the LamFT. 1940. At dusk tonight I saw 2 birds, one of whom roosted in the nest, the other of whom, as far as I could tell, roosted elsewhere in the same tree. 21 May 1800. Watching the nest on this foggy, cold evening. (go to p.5)
