1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold I Hastings Reservation 9 October 1130. Made a quick tour around this territory, managing to identify ①♀M/Red #567. 11 October 945. Watching. 1006. ①♀ [illegible] #505 arrived and is now eating an acorn. 1013. ②♀ R/R #567 arrived in granary with an acorn. 1018. ③♂ M/Red-Blk #566. Also ④♂ Wh-/M #568 eating an acorn 1045. Leaving. Everyone's here except for ⑤100, who I'm a little concerned about; however he certainly gets another chance to appear. No storing yet here, although the birds are busy eating green acorns. 22 October 735. Watching. 745. ①♀ Red/ #567 eating acorn in granary. ②♀ Wh-/ #505. ③♂ Wh-/M #568. 753. He's here: ④♂ Yel-Red/Yel #100. But I have to admit, it doesn't really look like Yel-Dgreen. ⑤♂ Blk/Or-Blk #566. • 830. j Wh-Maudue/M #568 is molting to a ♀! Guess it's still early after all! * 840. Intruding here briefly: ♀ Red/M #507 from L. Arnold 2. By the way, there are some acorns stored here now, although the birds still have a long way to go. * 858. j♀568 clearly gave way to j♂566 when the latter landed with an acorn to store on the same limb in the granary. 905. Leaving. Everyone's here; the only problem which once again has been raised is: is the A♂ here really ⑤100? 1 December 1345. Counted stores: 2052. Doing ok.
