1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak (9 October) area! 1035. After a long dearth I finally had 24 birds in the central area, inc. j6624, j?544, and ©8wn (4cl)#102. 1100. Giving up for now. 11 October 800. Searching for birds here. 810. Found 5-6 below the granary area at Bianca on side of hill. ①♂Red/Blk-Red #497; ②♀Red/M #427; ③♂Or/ #321. ④♂Blk/Or #426. ⑤♀LB/Dk-LB #544. Are at least 7 birds here. 830. ⑥♀Red-Lght/Blk-Lg #320. All the adults are here ⑦♂Or-LB/Or #545. ⑧♂LB-Dk/M #546 eating acorn (everyone's eating acorns here). ⑨♂LB-R/LB-R #624. 900. Well, I'm not likely to get as thorough a watch here as this for quite some time. Everyone is hanging out here except for 8102 (who I saw on the 9th over at Black Oak itself and is very likely over there now) and j625, who is, I would guess, most likely gone. These birds are clearly quite at home over here at old Bianca. 29 November 1130. Counted stores: Central area: 3230 4056. Side area: 826 The storage areas here are loaded; I have no doubt but that I undercounted by several hundred acorns!
