Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
Hastings Reservation
24 July Watched the nest from 13 1230-1500, seeing virtually no
activity at the hole at all (1 feeding by 8426) even though
there were plenty of birds in the vicinity. Individuals
I identified were ①♂102, ②♀8426, and ③j544.
5 August 930. Counted stores: 40 (all in central area). Definitely on
their last legs here!
No birds seen here in passing.
3 October 830. Counted stores: 48+, all new and just about all in
the one dead limb in the central area. Also got a quick
glance at 8426 in the area.
9 October 815. After seeing none at Black Oak proper I went over
to Bianca where there were numerous birds, particularly
along the far knoll extending down beyond the old granary
area.
825. ①♂Or-LB-or #545, ②♀LB/DB-LB #544; ③♂LB-Red/LB-Red #624.
all below the storage area on the N side of the knoll.
845. ①♂Or/DB-Yel(w) #321 up in the middle of the knoll.
850. An unbanded ♀ here - but no being displaced by 8321
and ⑤♀DB/Red #427.
900. Now watching the forest between Black Oak and Bianca,
when several birds are/were hanging out inc. an unbanded
1st yr 8-plumaged bird.
915. There are even a couple birds back at Black Oak proper now.
918. Apparently an unbanded ♀ intruder here being displaced
by somebody.
921. Intruder here now is ♀DB/Or - possibly j556 from ARF?
Yes! Also ♂ 8-Yel(w)/Or #557 here with her exploring the side
