Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
Hasting Reservation
21 January
1000. Watching from hide.
1025. Nothing. Going to look around.
1100. Over on the dead Perch tree in the forest S of Bianca
there was a ♀ who I sat and watched for nearly ½ hr
before she would show me a thing. She was in fact banded
and appeared to be ⚫♀ or-ca/ #320 from Black Oak.
She finally flew off in the direction of Bianca, which
is where I'm now off to.
1110. Nobody elsewhere at Bianca. Where are the Black Oak birds
hanging out these days?
1535. Over in thycorner between Bianca and Black Oak were
③♂ upper Red/ #497 plus a ♀.
1550. And a 3rd bird is at Black Oak, of all places, sitting in the
side storage area: ⚫♂ Blk/Or-Yel #426.
1607. And finally a 4th bird, sitting up in the perch area of the
forest betwixt BO and Bianca, revealed himself to be none other
than ⚫♂/♀ #102 when he flew into the central area to
chase out some dicky-bird. Not bad-that does it for the 2 birds
I missed in November plus the baby and one ♀.
26 February
1430. Counted stores: Central area: 2038 (!) ? 2405.
Side area: 367
I used the spotting scope for most of the central area (as
well as climbing up the fallen limb) and did a fairly
thorough job.
I didn't see any birds here while counting.

845. At least 4 birds, all probably from Black Oak, were
hanging around Bianca this morning. Identified for sure were
