Melanerpes formicivorus
ARF
Hartings Reservation
9 May Checked around here this morning (see map on back) and
actually randomly came across a nest with babies (young-
I guess 5-6 days). Although the granary of this group is
not the same as that of ARF (if my understanding is correct)
I'll probably call this group ARF unless we come up with
something better. In any case, this is the 1st real lead on
this group I've had since I discovered the granary here
several winters ago.
17 May 830. Opened the nest and banded the 3 babies, who are now
about 14-15 days old and #555-557. Checked the
granary, but didn't see any stored acorns. Hmm. This
got me thinking, and (especially after failing again to
find a nest at 'ARF,Too') I began to wonder about the
possibility that there aren't 2 groups up here after
all and that this nest is ARF,Too's. I guess I'll
just have to watch here to find out!
18 May 940. Watching the nest here.
1040. After missing several visits I finally saw 2 birds, a & and a
&, both of whom were unbanded. Sigh. I guess this isn't going
to solve the problem after all.
9 October j?556 and j?557 seen together up at Black Oak; see
BIR Oak notes for further details.
29 December Checked up on the granary here, which is fine and has lots of acorns
stored in it - enough to support the hypothesis that there
are 2 groups up here. I didn't see any birds in the area,
however.
