1980 Walter D. Koenig
Malamperes formicivorus
School Hill
Hastings Reservation
27 May 2100. Watched here at dusk but nothing at all happened.
Either nobody roosted there at the nest or, more likely, whoever
did so was firmly ensconced by the time I got up there at about
2015.
1 June Eggs are hatching here! See Ron's notes for details.
5 June 1100. Counted stores: Main tree #844? 936 (Dead limb:397)
Tree 1: 92 } 936
23 June 1700. Measured and banded the babies, who are now #602-604.
(See Ron's notes for copious detail concerning developmental
rates here).
26 June Watched the nest for 2h from 1530-1730, seeing a grand
total of 3 feeding visits. Pretty slow, I dare say.
27 June Watched the nest from 530-830, seeing only 8 visits. Not a
real satisfying group to watch!
4 August 1600. Counted stores: Main tree: 425 } 440.
Tree 1: 15 } 440.
12 September Last night Ron discovered a casualty: j603. He had
somehow managed to get his leg caught in the first
(1980) nest hole (where the sawcut was) and had died
there. He was pretty old, and probably expired somewhere
around mid-August or slightly later? Died, unnatural
cause ~20 Aug. ±2 wks.
22 September 845. Flushed 2 birds from here as I came to check stores.
I found 7Q (all in the main tree). All looked old, so
I don't believe they ever ran out here.
18 October 1200. #602 hawking at the lower barn. See Y notes.
15 November See my own and Ron's notes concerning School Hill birds at Y, today and
