Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3
(7 April) going into it this morning-but nothing yet.
9 April Ron went back up to the hole again, looked a little
more carefully, and found 5 eggs!
10 April Sandy watched here 900-1200. Then, at 1700, Ron and
I came back out and opened the hole so as to mark
and measure the eggs (there are still 5).
19 April 1915. Tonight, watching the nest, 8184 spent roosted by
himself.
24 April! 1530. Checked the nest to weigh and mark the babies, of whom
there are 4: 3 in good shape and 1 not so hot. 1 egg was
added and still in the nest as well. They were all marked
and returned by 1550.
1912. 8184 roosted in the nest again tonight.
1930. 8184 definitely roosted in the nest again tonight.
7 May 1530. Banded the babies, who are now #537-539 (only 3 made it).
This group does have stores left, by the way (lots).
These babies may very well be the earliest on record!
17 May 1700. None in any new holes here.
21 May The babies had-fledged by this morning! (Sandy's report).
22 May 1115. Went up and checked the nest hole - where everyone had indeed
fledged - and the 78 nest hole, where Sandy says they've been
paying attention working on, possibly for a 2nd nest. However, there
was nothing in it as yet.
28 May Ron checked the hole today: nothing yet (they've been paying attention
to the spring hole again.
30 May Ron reports 1 egg in the nest today - the year's 1st 2nd nest.
31 May No egg laid today - still only #1.
