1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 Hastings Reservation 8 January Purge: 9383. Moved to watched group [Road 7] about 18 Sept. 1979 ± 2 weeks (see Road 7 notes). j490. Last seen 18 July by Ron Murrie, gone by 25 August → Disappeared about 6 August ± 2 weeks j491. Caught in ambush 25 August, gone by 12 October (this bird never seen at the nest) → Disappeared about 18 September ± 2 weeks. 30 January 945. Watching. 952. ①♀OB/LP-LB#265 plus 2nd bird in perch tree across the creek. 1002. ②♂M/BL-WN#184 in VO granary 1008. A bird just zipped into the spring '79 nest hole (?!). 1010. ②♂ or/ LB#68 over in perch tree across creek. 1020. All 3 adults together in sycamore. No sign of anyone else. × 1042. Still the same 3 birds. They are actually still harvesting live oak acorns and bringing them to the granary to store. I've seen at least 6-8 trips by either ♂184 and/or ♀265. 1045. Leaving. Looks as though all the youngsters, including the babies, have either moved or died. 22 January 1005. Here for a 2nd check. ①♂ or/LB#68 in the old VO granary with a ♀. 1011. ②♂M#184 just in with a newly harvested acorn. 1013. ②♀OB/LP-LB#265. All 3 birds busy harvesting and storing acorns. 1035.
