1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 Hastings Reservation (25 May) They are now #577 to 580. The hole was fun to get to, as always. 6 June #115. Counted stores: Main Valley Oak: 572 ? 835. Doing relatively quite well. Peripheral areas: 263 4 August #115. Counted stores: Main Valley Oak: 82 ? 212 Peripheral areas: 130 25 August While we were all gone to the AOU meetings in Ft. Collins somebody managed to set fire to the whole of Poison Oak Hill; one way or the other the next tree here (used 1979, 1980) did not survive. Ron also reports these birds to be out of stores. 5 October Still no stores here today, although the acorns are just about harvestable. 28 November #1250. Counted stores: Main tree: 2951 Sycamore at road: 493 { 3480 Others: 36 Saw #269 in the process of counting. These birds lost perhaps 300 holes (at least) in the fire of 10 Aug, since the crews cut down one of the peripheral sycamores they had been using down by the creek. Nevertheless, these birds are still in pretty good shape.
