Melanerpes formicivorus
Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif.
(31 January) lots of stores at both Near Lambert and at the granary just
over the knoll from Bar-b-q. There were also numerous birds
around (inc. 2 at Bar-b-q, which lost most of its granary
last month) but all were very skittish and impossible to pin down.
2 February 1500. Over at Warp 5 along the road there are indeed stored
acorns-probably several hundred. Am now watching just to see
if I can nab anyone.
1505. 0♂[?3 here! Flew off before I could get a decent look.
1530. Noone coming back. Leaving, but I do want to
find out who lives here.
26 February 1530. Over at Near Lambert, where there was some activity
earlier with at least 5 birds in the granary together.
1545. 1♀ub.
1600. Leaving. Several birds here, mostly hiding from
me. Lots of stores here.

18 March This afternoon Pam and I went to visit Jane Tyler, the
woman who has the Acorn Woodpeckers with the yellow
crowns. Several new developments have taken place here
since we came in 1977: most interestingly, one of the yellow-
crowned birds (a ♀) was apparently dispersed down to the
local Post Office, about ¼ mile away and down the hill from
the Tyler's house. At her feeder were apparently 2 yellows
until recently and at least 3 during much of the winter,
but one of these disappeared awhile back and a second
(a ♂) had a growth in or on its bill which made it very
