1980 Walter D. Koenig 5 Melanerpes formicivorus Gate Hastings Reservation 30 June Add: 2nd unbanded ♂, Moved here (age unknown) about 10 Jan. 1980, presumably with the other ♂. 3 July 2000. Watched roosting here and saw 2 birds (only), both of whom roosted in the Gate sycamore near (but not in) the nest hole. 7 July Today while running out by the gate Gwen found the body of j600 dead along the road over by Westgate, apparently the victim of a car. The body was pretty fresh. → j600, Dead of unnatural causes 6 July 1980. A sad end for the 600th bird! 13 July 530. Ambushed at the hole below the nest hole in the Sycamore, but only nabbed ♂519. I have no idea where everyone else is roosting! 23 July 530. Another ambush at the same hole nabbed both unbanded adult ♂'s - now ♂626 and ♂627. ♂626 had a short wing and bill and very well may have been a 1st yr bird this year. ♂627 was larger and may be a year older. This group is now entirely banded! 1 August (1457). Counted stores: 335. 5 October While checking up on cale trees we passed here today and I found no stores (Ω). Thus, the birds did run out here and haven't stored any new ones yet. 17 November 955. Atop the Gate sycamore displacing an intruder: ♂03 Yel/DB #627. ♀? BILZ-Yel/ BIL#519. (also displaced an [the?] intruder.) 1020. Counted stores: 502. 1045. Wandering back along the path in squere nail flat I found a Valley cale with all 4 birds in it! Identified were ♂? or DB-WN #626
