1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Gate Hastings Reservation 24 April 930. None seen here; I also looked around for holes but promising didn't find any new ones. 25 April 1900. Walked around awhile at dusk but saw a big zero here. It may be time to watch awhile during the day here. 27 April 1700. Two birds seen here this afternoon in the granary and flying off more or less in the direction of horsetail field. I better watch here one of these days. 7 May 1000. Watched from up on the side of Haystack Hill here for 1/2 hr, seeing both birds frage together and eventually go into a hole in the Galesycamore (their nest). They're probably feeding, but we'll have to get up soon to find out for sure. 1400. Bird in hole again. Went up and opened it, however, to find 0 eggs thus far. 8 May 1230. None in the hole. (?) 9 May 1215. " " " . 12 May 1500. Finally- 4 in hole. 13 May 1630. 3 in hole. 1700. Checked hole: 3 fresh eggs. 14 May Sandy watched here this evening and reports that there are 2 38 here instead of only 1! 19 May 1400, Checked the hole: 4 eggs. 26 May 1600. Called out at the hole but no one home (!?) Also, I only saw 2 birds together here, as usual - I do wonder whether Sandy was right or not in there being 3 birds here. 27 May 1800. Again no one in the nest. Looks bad for this nest. 28 May 1300. Checked hole: 2 babies (!) but no sign of unhatched eggs. 31 May 1610. Counted stores: 444. 3 in hole; 18 seen in the granary. (p.4)
