1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Grazebo Hastings Reservation 19 January 1140. Watching. Several birds here in the storage area. ①♀M/or-w/n#510. 1200. ②♂LP/LB#517 with acorn. 1215. At least 4 birds in far porch tree: ③♀M/#509, ④♂M/light?#516. 1240. Leaving. ⑤♀485 probably here somewhere. ⑥♂518 must surely be gone, however. 21 February 1630. Still stores here as well as lots of water. No birds seen in passing, however. 9 March 1555. ①♂LP#517 here preening. 1605. ②♀La-da/4cb#509 chasing a Band-tailed Pigeon out of the perch tree. 1611. Several birds in the far edge of the territory. ③♀M/YL.#510. 1618. ! All 5 birds together at far edge: above 3 plus ④♂DB-YL/DB#516 and ⑤♀Mauro/Ble-WN(n)#485. Group is entirely intact. This is one where the 2 adult ♂♂ could be removed in order to see what happens with the 1st yr ♀♀. 10 March 1835. This calls into question my entire previous summation of this group (24 July 79). My new interpretation is that only 2♂♂ (now ④♂516 and ⑤♂517) joined the group in late April-early May, replacing ⑥♂480 and (most likely) the prior unbanded ♂ here. I think that
