1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blomone Hastings Reservation (27 March) Going to count stores. Stores in the main tree are pretty hard to count since they're all over. I got 2682 in the main tree and 52 in the tree next door for a total of 2734. Given my count and the date, I would guess that 3400 holes is an estimate comparable to those I have for the other groups. This group ought to be in good shape for some time to come. 9 April Both #494 and #496 over at a Revolution at Plaque. In fact, by the evening they had clearly won. See my own and Ron's Plaque notes. 11 April 1100. Bird in hole in granary; flushed out when I walked over to check more closely. 12 April 820. Two, possibly 3 birds here in/near the granary, but I got chased by a ♂ after a minute or so. None in the hole when I arrived. 19 April 945. 1 bird flushed from here but none in any holes. 25 April 945. Bird in hole. 1005. Bird still in hole: ♂. Watched for ½ hr, but the ♂ left after a brief time and none returned to the hole. When I left, however, I flushed 2 birds from one of the trees off to the correct (~North) of the granary. 1800. With a bird in the hole once again I went up to the hole and found 4 relatively fresh eggs! 27 April Watched incubation here from 920-1320 (4 hrs). 29 April Watched here from 940-1310 (3½ hrs). I saw at least 2 intruders, including an unbanded ♀ and ♂#494 (!) (go to p.6)
