Melanerpes formicivorus
Bloomere
(26 March) I timed him for 3 minutes, during which time
he garricked 28 times (9.3/min). At that point
birds returned. He is definitely off to the side, and
does not go to the granary, where a 2nd 8 is hanging
out, drumming, etc. He is also banded: 8 Red/M,
which makes him either 8530 (BP/Or/BP/Or) from School
Hill West (banded there as an adult last fall) or bird
513 (Or-BP/Or), banded as a nestling last spring at
Corral Viejo #1. I guess the latter, but either is a
possibility.
1640. Over in the small Blue Oak off to the North of the
granary are 9496 and 9478. 9478 mounts a
8 here; 8 then mounts 9478. 9478 then moves over
to sit by 9496.
1643. 2 birds again fell (hard!) to the ground over in
the other roost tree. My guess is that this happens when
8492 and the other banded 8 both follow a 9 to the same
place rather than sticking to their own areas.
1700. Leaving. It's bitterly cold here!
27 March
935. Watching. No immediate activity; upon arrival 9496, a
2nd 9, and 8 (513 or 530) were all in the other roost tree.
938. Someone is drumming here. 8 Red/M #494 here also.
8 9478 here now.
944. 8 (513/530) may be the only 8 here at the moment.
947. Got a good look at the 8: is 8 DP/M #513 from Corral Viejo!!
955. 8513 and 9494 drinking out of a tree hole together.
1000. At least for now, things seem fairly settled here.
