1980 Walker D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blomone (26 March) 1440. Now watching; all pretty quiet. 1445. 4 birds together atop granary. 1450. There is a fair amount of wake displaying and somebody is drumming; this is definitely a low-intensity Revolution. 1500. This is great! Just the way it's supposed to be! The activity is a little subdued, but everything is here nonetheless. The question is, why didn't I bring my spotting scope? In any case, there should be no problem here as far as the new ♂ is concerned. There are at present at least 5 birds here, inc. #496. 1532. There's more activity as I come by again; just as I was watching, 2 birds fell to the ground in combat and remained fighting on the ground for at least 10 seconds until I started running over. 1534. ! ♂w-Red/M #494 here! All 3 ♀♀ are here. There are at least 3 ♂♂ here fighting like crazy - and several are banded. 1537. 2 ♂♂ again fell to the ground in combat - there are even feathers flying here! 1540. 1 of the ♂♂ here is 8 or 18/1k, most likely the 1st yr #492 from 1500! Leaving for now (it's very cold out). Somebody is now Garricking here, and drumming and fighting continues: it's a Revolution for sure - not large, but a Revolution nonetheless. 1620. Back with scope. #492 sitting in tree next to granary Garricking. At least 1 other banded ♂ in granary. 1625. #492 Garricking; nothing much else happening.
