1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Haystack-Blouquist Hastings Reservation (2 August) 700. Unbanded ♀ came and investigated the granary for a few minutes while I was counting stores. Definitely the wandering season! Stores: 550. Not bad. 740. Now ♂173 and ♀576, here displacing intruders (unbanded jwvs, I believe). ♂LB-B1k/LB-B1k#576. 745. Unbanded ♀ in Valley Oak on HNHR side just down the fenceline 80m from the nest tree here. 21 September 1600. Flushed ♂173 from the granary apparently storing, and indeed they are at work here: 106 acorns, all new and green, now adorn the granary. 1650. Watching. (1)♂173; (2)♀ light/DB#484. 1705. Finally - one of the babies: ♂LB-B1k/LB-B1k#576. 1710. Leaving. No obvious sign of >3 birds, but a watch with the hide should get everyone rather easily. 7 October 845. Counted stores: 1235. Doing very well here, despite the fact that the acorn crop is at best fair around here. 10 October 920. 3 birds flushed when I arrived. 930. ♂or/m#173. 945. (2)♂LB-B1k/LB-B1k#576, (3)♀BP-Or/B1k#484. These 3 do indeed appear to be it. 950. Leaving. First-yr bird is storing right along with the other 2. 13 October Purge: j573, 574, and 575. All seen by Ron on 13 July; all apparently gone by 2 August → Disappeared about 23 July ± 1 week. 14 November 1515. Counted stores: 2360. The tree is pretty darn full!
