1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Haystack-Blomquist Hastings Reservation 11 January L. Hankes saw 2 birds here (1♂ and 1♀) this afternoon, but was unable to identify them. 15 January 1650. 1 bird sitting in the perch tree. 19 January 945. Watching. 1000. ♂ Or/m #173 plus ♀ in perch tree. ♀♀ - /B1k#484. Both here together. 1015. Leaving. Things appear to be cool, calm, and collected here with the birds just hanging out and eating stored acorns. 21 February 1515. Counted stores: 2125. Still loaded here. The Valley Oak roost tree up above the granary here on HNHR has already leafed out with new leaves ~½" long - an early spring indeed! Going up there, I find that some of the leaves are a good 2" long already, and also the tree is just beginning to bloom. 28 February Nancy saw both adults up here today along with (first-yr) 8492 from 1500 (!) All apparently rather amicable toward each other. 26 April 1545. Checked the nest (same old nest hole) where Ron had seen a bird looking out: 4 eggs, not fresh. 7 May 1700. Checked the nest, where all 4 babies are fine (and fairly old). 24 May 1215. Despite the rotten weather, it was time to band here, and I did: The 4 are now #573-576. 28 May 945. Counted stores here: 1318. Still doing fine here. 7 June 950. Passed by here, but didn't see anyone in any holes except for a baby who was squeetriring from the nest hole. 2 August 650. 2 ub juvs in the granary; now 8173 here trying to displace them.
