1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 1800 Hastings Reservation 10 April 1025. Nobody in any holes here. 24 April 915. " " " " 1 May 1700. Much to our surprise, these birds have managed to slip in a nest (in the nest hole!) already and have newly hatched babies! I didn't open the hole because it's very fragile, but they are no more than 3-4 days old, probably only 2 or so. 11 May 1600. Worse even than I remember it, I opened the hole here and banded the babies, of whom there are 5. They are now #561 to #565. 3 June 1545. Counted stores: 395. Saw one fledgling in one of the other holes in the granary. 9 July 1700 At least 3 babies - j563, 564, and 565,- plus an adult 8- are over in one of the Lone Valley Oaks on Blomquist field just on the way back from Blomone. Quite a ways from home! (see map on back). 2 August 750. Counted stores: 21. Definitely nearing the end here. 27 September 1100. There are no stores in the granary here as far as we can tell (old or new). 1125. Wandering over to the snag on the side of the hill down by the creek where the birds have roosted we discovered that the roost hole (where I ambushed 8476 in 1978) has fallen. Most of the tree is still there, but that limb is long. 17 November 1115. Counted stores: 1304 (all in the Main tree et environs; the old nest tree is still not being used!) 21 December At least 5 birds up in the dead tree - 9565 identified.
