1980 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 1500 Hastings Reservation (2 August) In tree 3 I saw (1) j Red/Yellow #623, so the babies are out and around. 27 September 1050. No stores remaining here and no new stores remaining. Put in yet. Wait - we just found 1 brand new acorn in Tree 1! 10 October 1000. (1) 3 BLK/Dr.BLK #622; watching the granary. 1010. (2) 8 LB/LB #493 here also; now along with 8622 and (3) j Red/Yel #623 apparently molting to →♀. 1045. Birds apparently wary; also, even though they are eating green acorns, nobody appears to be storing as yet. 1055. Leaving. 17 October 930. Watching from hide. 1010. (1) 8 LB/LB #493 over in lower sap side; along with (2)♀ Yel/BLK/Lght #495. 1015. Landing in tree 1: (3)♂ M/BLK #492. 1022. Over in LSS is now (4) 8 or/light/Blk #297 (no wing streamer on living). Looks like everyone is here, but none is storing as yet. 1030. Leaving. 15 November 1600. Counted stores: Tree 1: 1561 1976. Tree 2 415 This tree is stuffed up in the style of the old days! 21 December Saw 8493 and 9623 down at the creek in passing.
