N. section S. section Mar. 11, 12, 17 No. birds 1550 Mar. 23 63 No. flocks 17 0 Non-Grid Species Accounts Albatross Black-foot Albatross were found to be common in both non-grid sections, al- though again they were not seen with land in sight. Fourteen Black-feet were recorded. One Laysan Albatross was observed as we neared the first leg of the grid. Shearwater/Petrels Small procellariforms appeared to be equally abundant in the north and south sections of the non-grid area. Fulmars (14) were the most frequently sighted; twelve were dark phase and one each being intermediate and light phase birds. In the northern section one Palefoot Shearwater and one White-rumped Storm Petrel were logged. In the southern section one Sooty/slender-bill was observed. Cormorants and Pelicans Cormorants (3) and Brown Pelicans (1) were observed only in the northern section, but not in the southern section probably due to our distance from land. I might note that Cormorants in the harbor areas appear greatly reduced in number as compared to the two previous months. Black Brant One group of eleven Black Brant was observed in the Santa Barbara channel. Loons One Loon was observed in the northern section six hours before entering the grid area. It was flying north about fifty miles from land.
