2001 2002 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 2 Knoll HNHR (15 July) active back at The 2nd nest hole (tag 1324), where Jen saw egg tossing. I checked it: 7 fresh eggs. Measured 2: ① 25.3 x 18.9 and ② 25.1 x 18.9. EHD ~ 24 July. 26 July 1500. Checked nest: empty. But there was ½ an eggshell, so I think at least one egg made it to hatching. 2002 11 Apr 07 1030. Opened a new hole in the locust on the other side of the barn: 7 freshish eggs. With 3 males here, an experiment would be in order. 12 Apr 07 1900. Watched roosting. The bird that roosted in the nest was - a helper! or - DBM #3401! After she went in, ♂ (CN)/(CN) #2563 came by and no doubt would have roosted there if 3401 hadn't already been inside, but he ended up leaving. 13 Apr 07 1915. Tonight, here's what I think happened: 82563 went in, stayed late. Then #3401 came to the hole, almost went in, but then left. Just when I thought it was all over, wm/m?? came, 82563 left, and the right solid?/m bird went in, sp apparently for the count. This would appear to be 82749 (yel/m). Being so close to #3401 I can't be absolutely positive, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't or-de/m 3401 that roosted tonight. This also opens the possibility that it was also 82749, not 3401, that roosted last night.
