2001 Waltird Koenig 2002 2003 Melanerpes formicivorus Cavity HNHR (11 May) Thus, assuming the (1st) egg was laid on 8 May, it was laid when the kids were 23 days old. 23 May 1200. 3 babies, ~2 to +1 unhatched egg (24.6×20.1). Band ~11 June. Be careful opening this hole! 11 June 1315. Banded the 2 kids in the 2nd nest. Maybe they'll go for a third...? 25 June 1830. Bird in (1st) nesthole again: 2 hatchlings +2 unhatched eggs: ① 24.7×20.6 (developed; prob. will hatch) and ② 23.3×20.6 (undeveloped). A first! 3 nests in one season! Band ~14 July. 15 July 1630. Banded the 2 kids in the (unprecedented) 3rd successful nest here this spring! 2002 22 Apr 1315. Bird in new hole: 3 babies, ~2-3 do! Band 5/10. Hole tagged 5553. 10 May 1330. Banded the 3 kids (3663-3665). 14 June Checked the (1st) nesthole: zilch. No 2nd nest at all, apparently. 2003 7 Apr 1110. Bird in hole. 8 Apr 800. Checked The (high) hole and peeped 2 others: zilch 23 Apr 845. Checked the hole again: still empty, even Though birds have definitely been going in here. 6 May 1400. Birds in the hole again, but STILL empty! Egg tossing? What's up here?
