2001 2002 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicarius Plaque Anny HNDR 19 July 1500. 2 fledglings (at least one unbanded) in the nice new hole I discovered up here a month ago or so. It occurs to me: are these the Cabin birds?? Time to ambush. 20 July 0500. Ambushed, nabbing 5 birds: a 9NOBA, 83018 (a 1998 ARB bird!), 2 recent fledglings, plus one bird who I'm fairly confident (but not absolutely positive) is an older juvenile from an earlier spring nest; best I could tell she was just beginning her crown molt to a ♀. So: Plaque Anny did exist (and still does), and apparently had 2 successful nests, one fledgling recently. I think, but can't be positive, I got everyone here, at least. 2002 23 April 820. None in the hole. 23 May Bird flushed from the other (unopened) hole! 1030. Opened the hole (now tagged #5561): 5 eggs, incubated! ① 27.2 x 21.0 ② 26.6 x 19.8 ③ 27.9 x 20.9 ④ 27.7 x 20.7 ⑤ 27.7 x 26.5 (calipers checked). Group here after all! 30 May 1200. 3 babies, a good 4-5 do, + 2 unhatched eggs (1 looks undeveloped; 1 developed). Band ~ 15 June. 7 June 1600. Still 3 kids looking fine. 10 June 1430. Banded the 3 kids as #3718-3720.
