2002 Walter D Koenig 2003 Melanerpes formicivorus Branca HINKER (17 May) ① 26.0 × 19.3 ② 26.5 × 18.9 ③ 27.1 × 18.3 and ④ 26.5 × 19.2. (Calipers checked) Could be a final experimental group. 21 May 1945. I scared a bird out of the hole when I arrived, but despite plenty of time for someone to return and roost, noone ever did as best I could tell. It would seem as though I may as well collect the eggs! 22 May 1130. Eggs warm; collected them for the least (6th) experimental removal of the year. 12 June Still stores (up in the VO over toward LA-2). 30 August Pretty much out of stores. 2003 12 March Lots of acorns here, up in the VO on the knoll over toward LA-2. 17 April 1645. Opened the new hole in the granary on the knoll: 4 fresh eggs. A potential experimental group. 21 April 1330. Took the 4 eggs (exp #5). Measurements: ① 26.1 × 18.4 ② 28.9 × 18.4 ③ 26.1 × 18.2 ④ 27.8 × 18.2 10 May 1145. Checked the old nest hole (tag #1146): empty. 13 May 1100. Turns out it's a new hole in that tree, out on the one remaining live limb, now tagged #5802. 4 eggs, Incubated, ① 28.0 × 18.2 ② 26.6 × 18.2 ③ 26.4 × 18.5 ④ 26.9 × 19.0 4 June 1300. Banded #616d the 4 kids. Lots of stores. 30 June 1215. First nest hole empty.
