2000 2001 Walter Koenig Melanipes formicivorus Fanny Arnold HNHR 13 April 1000. Opened the (new) hole in the VO that they're interested in here, but it's empty. A few acorns still stored here, but not many. Correction! The snag (where they nested last year) still has lots of acorns in it. 16 May 1 June 1430. 4 kits, 3-4 do. Band ~ 2 June. Banded the 4 kits. Plenty of stores left. 27 June Still plenty of stores, mainly in the snag: 20 July Still stores. 1 September Out of stores. None in a hole. Nonetheless, there were several birds upset at my visit and I wouldn't be surprised if something were afoot. 2001 27 April 1030. Bird in hole (tag #1146): 5 eggs, fresh. Yes- 2 the sails! ① 25.7 x 19.5 ② 24.8 x 19.2 ③ 24.6 x 19.0 ③ 25.7 x 19.5 ⑤ 21.4 x 16.4 (a runt?) EHD ~ 7 May. 1 May 1100. Still 5 eggs, 2/2 (not including the runt) are developing. 11 May 1100. 3 babies, 3-4 do + 1 (normal) unhatched egg. Band ~ 5/28. 24 May 1215. Nest completely empty! 26 July Nellie watched some NOBA fledglings here, so we probably did miss a 2nd nest. Am going to try and ambush them. 27 July 515.
