2003 Walter D Koenig 2004 Melanerpes formicivorus Photo HNNH- (10 Apr) 1430. Opened the (old) hole: 5 eggs (1 a runt); fresh ① 23.4 x 20.0 ② 23.0 x 19.4 ③ 24.7 x 19.5 ④ 24.6 x 19.5 ⑤ 19.2 x 14.4. 26 Apr) 1300. 4 babies (1 on way out), 4-5 days old, no eggs. Band ~ 12 May. (Hole #5556) 10 May 1300. Still 4 kids. Set ambusher, hoping to get the NOBA here in a couple of days. 13 May 1400. Banded The 4 kids. NOBA didn't feed, so he's still at large. Acorns: you bet. 2004 14 March 600. After ambushing the 2003 nest hole plus a new hole in the Black Oak (and getting zilch) I ambushed at the Poison Oak tree (old nest hole) where we saw all the birds come out yesterday morning, and got - 1 bird! 63263. Pretty disappointing. 13 May 1115. On a complete lark, I climbed up the black oak and checked the new hole I opened in March, and pulled out - 1 very old nestling! I had to take him down to bleed him, returning him a couple hours later. Unfortunately, I could very well have missed other nestlings here. 19 May 1500. Set an ambush at the 1st nest hole, and checked the other (higher) hole (tagged 5556); 3 kids, ~2 do! Band ~ 7 June. Lots of stores here.
