2001 Walter D Koening Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill West HNMR (11 May) None of the other 5 eggs are developed Which means that either they're infertile or they were all laid long after the one that's hatched. We'll see. Assuming 11 days, the hatched one should have been laid no later than 30 April (and incubated since then...!) While I know that the last 3 eggs were laid 5-7 May and shouldn't hatch until ~18 May. Odd, to say the least, but it's clear they only would have ended up with this one kid so perhaps it's just as well I took the clutch. 17 May The 5 eggs are still looking undeveloped. 1530. None in a hole here. Still acorns. 29 May 830. Checked the nest (which also has 5 eggs). None have hatched. This is worrisome, given the track record of the prior nest. But at least 2 of the eggs do look developed, so may be it will be OK, despite the fact that they should have hatched by now. 31 May 1430. Checked the nest: 2 babies, 1-2 do, + 4 unhatched eegs, 2 of which developed and could still hatch, I suppose, for all the good it will do them. At least somebody hatched! Band ~ 6/19. 14 June 1130. Banded the 3 kids.
