2000 2001 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill West HNHR 7 Feb 945. Went up here with Teresa. Didn't see any birds, but there are >100 stored acorns in the granary. 12 April Stores here, but none in any holes. 20 July No stores left. 4 April 1000. Bird in (upper) hole: 4 fresh eggs. Hole tagged #1301. 9 April 1900. At roosting, I thought I saw #3111, but I wouldn't swear to it. Next time try the left side--it's too bright over here on the right. (See 10 April; scratch this one.) 10 April 1900. OK. Tonight I got him for sure, and it was Red-or/DB #3113, not 83111. Given my ambivalence last night and the similarity of the 2 evenings (it's not like anyone else even seems to have thought about roosting here), I think I should scrap yesterday's watch and just go with 83113. 12 April 1908. He waited until it was quite late, but-- 83113 was definitely the rooster again tonight. So: 83113 3/2 by himself for sure; I might "und." 13 April 1330. Came to collect the eggs, but got 2 surprises. First, there was a 8 not on the field list in the hole: 8 DG/872-42804 31/2. Second, the 4 eggs were all fresh and clean--i.e. they look like they'd just been laid! It's possible they're all infertile; I should check in a couple of days.
