2002 2003 2004 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Chongo HNNR 23 April 945. Lots of stores here and at least 2 birds flying around. Also a nice new hole in the granary, but no sign of a nest yet. 1 June Still stores, and birds in the canyon, but no sign of a nest anywhere. 23 August There are still acorns stored here! Time to get these guys. 2003 25 April Definitely stores and birds here. Found a likely- looking new hole in the granary. But none in anything. 5 June 1330. Kids! In a new hole in the granary! Came back, opened the hole, & banded them- ready to fledge they were. Hole tagged #5810. Acorns? You bet. 7 July 430. Ambushed the nest hole: empty. (5801) 2004 3 May 1100. Put the door back on last year's nest hole (tag #5801). (It had fallen off at some point over the winter). No stored acorns, by the way. 21 May Went to put the door back again, only to discover a Flicker nest w/ babies! Guess I'll have to put it back on later. (Tag 5810) 23 Aug Finally put the hole cut back together. Still no sign of anyone up here, though.
