2001 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes fornicivorus Stramberg HNHR 17 April 1300. Bird in high (covered with the glove!) hole again, so I checked it this time: 4 eggs, incubated! 22 April 1920. Finally managed to watch roosting here: 2 birds went in; one was [♀] M/ Lgt-2757 and the other was [♂] (CN)/(CN) #2762. Only one bird left, so I imagine that was the ♂, leaving ♂2762 in for the night. 23 April 1920. I saw 3 birds enter: ♂3228, ♂2997 (both helpers) and ♂2762 (the breeder). I couldn't be certain about who left (at least 2 did), but since ♂2762 was the only breeder♂ involved, I have to suspect that he spent the night in the nest. 24 April 1600. Collected the 4 babies, the largest of which weighed 20.4 g (~5 days old). They are now #3357-3360. ELED=8 April; hatched 19 April). 5 May Power struggle here! Mark even found a NOBA ♀ dead on the ground below one of the trees. 82913 Watched for a bit: saw ♂2762, ♂2802, ♂2997 -- the ♂♂ are OK. But lots of ♀♀, inc. > 1 NOBA, ♀ M/wh/DB #3180 (from Gate), and ♀ Bk/Br #3124 . Apparently ♂2757 is gone, I fear. Too bad! Lots of activity! ♂3180 + ♀ Bk/Br #3124 are the 2 that are with the ♂♂ in the main trees all the time - clearly
