2000 2001 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Stromberg HNHR 18 April 1345. Stores: Yes. Bird in hole: Yes. The (old) upper one. So I climbed up, only to discover (1) it's too deep to reach the bottom and (2) the back has fallen out. Because of the latter, I assume, based on no evidence, that they aren't nesting there. But I nailed one of my old gloves to block the hole, so maybe they will! The lower (new) hole looks quite good, by the way, but needs opening if they use it. 3 May 1245. Opened the lower (new) hole, now #1148. 3 eggs, incubated (EHD ~ 8 May). Measured 1:25.4x19.3 12 May 1420. 3 kids, 3-4 do. Band 29 May. 30 May 1330. Banded + bled the 3 kids. 31 August 1000. Bird in hole! Checked it: 4 eggs, incubated! EHD: ~ 3 Sept. 5 Sept. 1400. Just watching: 3 hatchlings + 1 egg, which still could hatch. Band ~26 Sept. 21 Sept. 1575. Banded the kids here (all 3). 2001 12 April 1115. Bird in upper hole! Climbed, but this is the one with the glove (partially) covering the cut in back so I didn't check it, I only patched up the glove. Meanwhile, I did check the lower hole (#1148) finding it filled with 73" of crappy water. I cleaned it out as best I could, but it's still kind of crumby (wet) at the bottom.
