2000 2001 WaltrD Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Y2K HNHR (A July) Joey reminded me that this group was probably here last year. In other words, one or more of the 5 birds could easily be kids from last year. Perhaps DNA will clear all this up, at least if we ever catch that last ♂! I checked across the road and found no stones. Unless they have some over & closer to the nest, they're out. 5 July 500. Ambushed the nest, nabbing - yes - the NOBA♂, now #3293! Got 'em all, finally. So, as an added bonus, ♂3293 spent the night in the nest. (I checked and there was none else except the 2 kids in the hole.) 30 August No stones left, best I can tell. 2001 17 April 1400. Bird in Valley oate Hole: 4 eggs, incubated. This hole (#1349) was the aborted 2000 nest. 25 April 945. 4 babies, ~4 do. Band ~18 May. 2 May 1000. Set an ambusher. Nest OK! 9 May 1015. Set to catch the #NOBA(s). 1300. Gave up. 10 May 1505. Back again for another try. 1630. Got her! Banded her and the 4 kids. 4 June 1730. Checked last year's hole (#285 - in the snag) but zilch. 11 June 1430. Again: no nest in last year's hole.
