2000 2001 Walter Koenig Melanerpes fomticivorus CVI HNHR 20 April 1430. Bird in hole (new hole in VO where I ambushed last fall). 4 eggs, 2-3 days. EHD: 29 April. Measured 2: (1) 25.2 x 18.2 (2) 22.9 x 17.5. Plenty of stores here. 22 May 28 May 1200. Stores: Yes. Sign of a renest: no. Cleared out a starling nest with small kids in their April nest hole (!) Last night a bird was roosting over in the sycamore by the creek, but no sign of interest there today. 1100. Opened the new hole in the sycamore partway (there was a bird in it again), but it appears to be empty. 13 June 1230. Finally got it - a new hole (now #1120) in the sycamore facing up toward Blountree but much higher than the old hole. (on other Apparents together side of limb and a tad lower than the pair of holes). 4 eggs, fresh. Measured one: 23.8 x 18.2. 24 June 1515. Bird in the hole, but it's empty! Failed again! Hole is in a limb 4 hands around, by the way. 2001 CVIA 4 May 1445. Opened the new hole they're working on in a spindly VO next to the sycamore, but it's empty. 7 May 1345. Birds in both the new hole and last year's sycamore hole. 8 May 1400. Birds in both holes again, so I checked them both! Last year's hole is in OK shape but empty. The new (el crappo) hole was 5 fresh eggs (EHD 18 May). (1) (see next page)
