2000 2001 Walter Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Murf HUNTER 20 April 1415. Checked nest: 4 babies, ~1 do, +1 unhatched (possibly pipping) egg. Band ~10 May. (Don't forget the NOBA here!) Plenty of stores here. 12 May 1400. Banded and bled the 2 kids here. 31 May Still plenty of stores. None in a hole, though. 6 June 1200. Bird in (same) hole. 9 June 1800. Checked the hole: 4 eggs, pretty fresh. (EHD: 17 June). Measured one: 27.0 x 20.5 mm. 19 June 1100. All 4 kids hatched, 2-3 do. Band ~6 July. 4 July 1330. Banded the 3 kids. Still stores. 2001 16 April 1040. Power struggle activity up here; a fairly substantial one. Something's up. 21 May 1130. Bird in hole! 4 eggs, incubated. Measured one: 26.7 x 21.2. The hole is not last year's; it's in the tree above it. It's been opened, so it's an old hole, presumably from the early or mid 90's. 14 June 1500. Banded the 4 kids.
