2001 2002 Walter D Koening Melanerpes furnicivorus Los Arbolitas HNHR. (4 June) 1 a runt. Forgot to check whether they were incubated or not; I'd say probably not much. 10 June 2000. Must have failed again - none showed the slightest interest in the hole tonight at roosting. Bummer. 21 June 1500. 4th attempt back in the original hole: 8 eggs 1-2 days incubated. I took # half (4) to incubate ourselves just in case this time. 27 June 1900. Watched roosting: 8 BIK/M #2095 roosted by himself for sure. 29 June 1030. With one of the eggs hatched, we returned them, taking blood from 3 hatchlings (incl the one we had) so we have something no matter what. Band ~ 19 July. 18 July 1030. Banded the 4 kids. 2002 16 Apr 7 1620. Bird in the hole where they were finally successful last year. Needs to be checked! 17 Apr 7 1300. Opened the hole: 7 fresh eggs. I should watch here a bit and then take them. 19 Apr 7 730. Watching. 802. 8 (CN)/M #3017 enters. 915. Can't get anyone else. Collecting The eggs: there are 9 of them. Measured: ① 23.5 x 18.7 ② 23.7 x 19.0 ③ 25.4 x 19.3 ④ 25.7 x 19.6 ⑤ 23.6 x 19.1 ⑥ 23.8 x 18.7 ⑦ 23.5 x 18.8 ⑧ 25.1 x 19.4 ⑨ 24.2 x 19.5 Clearly 2 99; all eggs nice & fresh.
