Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack

19 April) 1415. Lots of stores. None in a hole, but I checked
the traditional hole anyway and was rewarded with
2 (cold) eggs: ① 23.8 × 19.6, ② 24.3 × 20.1.
Need to check again for clutch size; EHD ~ 3 May.
23 April) 1645. 5 eggs.
3 May 1430. Hatching. 4 hatchlings + 1 egg, pipping and alive.
No doubt all 5 will hatch, even if this last one doesn't
wake it. Band: 24 May.
24 May 1400. Banded + bled the 5 babies. Plenty of stores.
12 June 1400. At least one kid plus an adult (inside excavating
in the nest hole, but best I can tell it's empty.
(But it's been deepened and I couldn't quite reach
the bottom, so I couldn't be sure.)
19 July Still plenty of stores.
1530. They also have a nest! 4 kids (one smallish);
a good 14 do (ELED ~ 25 June). Could
be banded anytime, although I wouldn't go much
past 26 July
21 July 1500. Banded The 4 kids (one probably won't make
it; other 3 fine) in this 2nd nest.
30 August 930. Still stores. More interestingly, a decent power
struggle is going on! Wonder what's up & who bit
the dust?

30 March None in the traditional hole, but I checked it
anyway: empty.
9 April 1300. Bird in traditional hole, but still empty!
