2003 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Dizzy 7 April Stores: yes. None in the holes, though. 28 April 1500. Bird in low hole: Yes! 5 eggs, fresh (1 a nest). Measured them: ① 26.0 × 19.8 ② 26.5 × 19.7 ③ 26.0 × 20.4 ④ 26.3 × 19.0 ⑤ 19.5 × 15.4. 1 May 1200. Took the 5 eggs; experimental group (#5?). 17 May 940. Bird in hole (tag 1307) again! Yes! 5 eggs a couple days incubated. ① 26.5 × 26.5 ② 27.2 × 20.4 ③ 27.4 × 20.6 ④ 26.1 × 19.4 ⑤ 28.0 × 19.7. 28 May 1130. Checked the nest: still the same 5 eggs, none of which have developed! Bummer! Yet another all infertile clutch, and an experiment! at that. Oh well. I took the eggs - doesn't seem like there's any point leaving them. With luck they'll try again. 14 June 700. Bird in the old old old Hay-Blom hole! 19 June 1100. Finally succeeded in opening the hole, which has 3 hatchlings + 1 developed egg. (Band ~ 9 July, but get blood ASAP!) 24 June 2000. Watched roosting; 8'm / 5:07 #3587 roosted for sure. 8'3588 came after 83587 was in, but then left before entering once he saw the other bird in the hole. 27 June 700. Took blood from the 3 kids. 3 July 1345. Nest empty! Some scat (black turds) in the bottom, from a snake? At least we got blood! There are still a few stores here.
